Board exams are meant to determine the merit of students on a common standard. But, there are issues which many overlook. The first being that the marks a student gets for a two hour exam cannot determine his/her merit. The second and most important thing is that, the exams have been turned into a rat race for parents’ reputation more than a healthy competition among students. Again based on the marks they received, the stream they would pursue for further studies is mostly forced on them ,seldom a student gets the liberty to select what he/she would like to study! The increased suicide rate among teenagers has been influenced by this pressure as well. Moreover the excessive high marks that the student receives in their 12th board exams is in no way at par with the marks the would receive in their graduation courses the disparity comes as rude shock to the students. This disparity is unacceptable to parents who expect similar high marks and when the student fails he/she crumbles under the pressure! Board exams should be a medium of preparing the students for the world they are going to face after school not a mere stage for clashing reputation of adults!
