In an atmosphere laden with vitriol, Prime Minister Narendra Modi rose above political wranglings by taking to twitter to ‘pray’ for Sonia Gandhi’s quick recovery and good health. Congress President had fallen ill while she was on a political rally in Varanasi and her journey had to be cut short.
Sonia Gandhi spearheaded the massive road show in Varanasi, the Prime Minister’s constituency. She, however, did not complete the march and left it towards the end of the eight km road show, as she was not feeling well. She had been suffering from fever, due to which her plan to visit the Kashi Vishwanath temple and offer prayers were cancelled and she planned to return to Delhi.
Congress hopes to point out several unfulfilled promises made by BJP and its most prominent leader Prime Minister Narendra Modi with respect to Varanasi in particular and Uttar Pradesh in general to drive home the point that the Central government has failed so far to fulfill its commitments in UP, a state where it had won big during the Lok Sabha elections.
Congress has been hoping for a good show in Uttar Pradesh, where Assembly elections are due in 2017. It has been out of power in the state for more than two decades now and is relying on the campaigning of Sonia Gandhi, apart from several other leaders. Shiela Dixit has already been named as the Congress’ Chief Ministerial candidate for the state of Uttar Pradesh.
Thousdands of Congress workers carrying placards were present during the road show which began from Circuit House and was to conclude at the Englishya Lane. However, it took a halt at the Lohurabir Rounadabout and later went on without the Congress President. At the beginning of the journey, in a symbolic move, Sonia Gandhi garlanded a statue of B R Ambedkar. Sonia Gandhi was accompanied by Shiela Dixit, Raj Babbar, AICC General Secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad and several other senior party leaders.
