Wrestler Sakshi Malik wins bronze medal for India in 58kg category today at Rio Olympics 2016, becoming the first Indian female wrestler to win a medal at the Olympics. The 23-year-old wrestler from Haryana’s Rohtak district defeated Tynybekova (8-5) in a nail-biting contest contest for the Bronze medal in which she fought back from 0-5. After catching up 5-5 in the second period of the match, scoring two points by throwing Tynybekova on the mat, she pulled ahead by pinning down her rival in the final moments of the match.
Malik is only fourth Indian woman athlete to win an Olympic medal after Karnam Malleswari, Mary Kom and Saina Nehwal.
After ending India’s agonising wait for an Olympic medal at the Rio Games with a bronze medal, Indian women wrestler Sakshi Malik said it was the result of her 12 years of persistent hard work.
Sakshi’s victory brought cheers to the Indian contingent and fans after 11 days without a medal.
