A new study has found out possible reasons behind premature pregnancy in women. The study reveals that both underweight and obese women who gain weight rapidly during pregnancy, abnormal interval between pregnancies, female’s body mass index can be responsible for pre term pregnancies.
The study, which was published in journal named, Maternal and Child Health Journal, has extensively delved on how if these factors were changed, the possibility of premature births can be diminished. The study was conducted by Emily DeFranco and her colleagues, with data from birth records of nearly 4,00,000 people. Out of that, factors causing premature birth which were potentially modifiable were present in more than 90 percent of the women. The study found that almost 25 percent of the women, who were underweight, had the highest rate of pre mature birth. Those women, with less than six months’ gap between each pregnancy, had preterm birth percentage of almost 13 percent. For those with six to twelve months’ pregnancies, the pre term birth percentage stood at 10.4 percent.
As per studies, children born prematurely are at a greater risk of becoming adults with brittle bones. If babies are born with low birth weight, then too there is risk of osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis can be a result of interruption in transfer of calcium to the growing foetus from the mother’s body which can cause in weaker bones in adult or later life. As per the findings, adults born prematurely have lower peak bone mass as compared to those who were born in full term.
