‘Pawri Ho Rahi Hai’ is the new viral trend on the Internet. Everyone is going crazy over it. The trend started when 19-year-old Pakistani social media influencer Dananeerr Mobeen shared a clip on her Instagram account @dananeerr on February 6 in which she is seen partying with friends somewhere in the hills. In the video, she said: “Yeh humari car hai, yeh hum hai or yeh humari pawri ho rahi hai (This is our car, this is us and we are partying).” Indian YouTuber Yashraj Mukhate created a rap around the clip. The put-on accent – pawri for party – made Dananeerr a social media sensation overnight. It spawned hundreds of funny videos on social media. The meme factory went into an overdrive. Even famous brands such as Netflix, Dominos and Swiggy posted their hilarious takes on the viral video.
The Internet is a funny place. Social media makes ordinary people celebrities overnight. For the content created by them, or for the content created on them. Dananeerr created the ‘pawri’ video and put it out on her social media but several others didn’t. Remember the dance moves of a professor at a wedding? Or, the clip from a Malayalam song in which wink of an 18-year-old actor set the hearts of several teenagers aflutter? Those contents were not planned for social media. They landed there accidentally or for a different purpose but ended up making people in the videos social media sensations.
This fortnight, we have decided to take a look at all such ordinary people who became social media stars.
Dananeerr, also known as Geena, posts content on beauty, fashion, make-up and lifestyle on social media platforms. She also likes to sing and is a talented painter. Her Instagram account has many of her singing videos and paintings. Dananeerr is also fond of cooking and often shares her blogs in which is seen cooking. She also shares recipes with her fans. She can speak four languages – Urdu, English, Pushto and a little bit of Hindko – and is learning German. She wants to become a civil servant. After the ‘pawri’ video, the number of her followers is around 400,000.
Priya Prakash Varrier turned into an overnight sensation when a 30-second teaser clip of Malayalam song, Manikya Malaraya Poovi, from her upcoming film Oru Adaar Love, was shared on social media around Valentine’s Day in 2018. The clip, showing Priya in school uniform and winking at a fellow student, sent the Internet into a meltdown. Like the fellow student, the social media was instantly floored by the wink. Her playful wink and sharp features made many weak in the knees and she consequently became the national crush.
3. Pooja Jain (Dhinchak Pooja)
Dhinchak Pooja, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, gained internet fame when she began releasing her songs on YouTube. ‘Selfie Maine Leli Aaj’, ‘Swag Wali Topi’ and ‘Dilon Ka Shooter’ are some of her famous songs that got millions of views on YouTube. She was also subjected to a wide range of criticism from audiences but did that matter! For the social media success, she found a place in the reality show ‘Bigg Boss’ in 2017.
4. Sanjeev Shrivastava (Dancing Uncle)
Sanjeev Shrivastva, an electronics professor, killed it with his dance moves at a wedding function in Gwalior in 2018. It was his brother-in-law’s sangeet ceremony and he swayed to a popular song of his screen god, Govinda. Someone from the family shot the video and posted it on social media, making Shrivastva an internet sensation. The 46-year-old man said he had no idea how the video of him and his wife dancing went viral. The man, who teaches electronics engineering at Bhopal’s Bhabha Engineering Research Institute, drew praise for his dance moves by celebrities. The Madhya Pradesh government made him the brand ambassador of Vidisha Municipal Corporation.
5. Ranu Mondal
In July 2019, Atindra Chakraborty, a 26-year-old engineer, spotted Mondal humming a Mohammad Rafi song at the Ranaghat railway station in West Bengal. On his request, she sang a popular Lata Mangeshkar song, ‘Ek pyaar ka nagma hai’. Chakraborty recorded it on his mobile phone and shared it on Facebook. The video collected more than four million views within a few days and made Ranu an internet sensation. Mondal got a makeover and was invited for a live performance on the reality TV show, ‘Superstar Singer’ where she sang the same song. Bollywood composer Himesh Reshammiya was so impressed with her singing talent that he offered her a song. Reshammiya posted a clip of Mondal recording ‘Teri Meri Kahani’ for the Hindi film, Happy Hardy and Heer, on his Insta account. Mondal later received internet flak for misbehaving with a fan who wanted to take a selfie.
