Possible to protect the heart in cancer treatment

Jaipur –

It is now possible to prevent the negative effects on heart during the treatment of breast and lung cancer with Deep Inspiration Breath Hold (DIBH) technology. For the first time in the state, this technology has now been started at Bhagwan Mahaveer Cancer Hospital and Research Center. Dr. Nidhi Patni, Director and Senior Cancer Specialist, Department of Radiation, said that this radiation therapy is one of the world’s latest techniques, which is available only at select centers in India.

Dr Nidhi Patni also said that in today’s time though the patients are leading a normal life after beating breast and lung cancer, heart-related diseases have started appearing in these patients. The reason for this is the radiation on the heart during cancer treatment. Heart can be saved from radiation by using DIBH technique with the help of a separate device (respiratory gating) in advanced machines of radiation. For this therapy, the patient is made to practice for a few days, in which he is taught how to hold and exhale during radiation. During holding of breath the patient’s heart moves away from the cancerous organ being exposed to radiation & radiation is given from the machine at this same time. With the help of this technique, it is possible to keep the patient’s heart completely healthy during breast and lung cancer treatment.
