Donation drive for children organised at Sanganer open prison

Supporting the education and well-being of children living with their families in the prison

A donation drive was organised for children at the Sanganer Open Prison by the Prison Aid and Action Research (PAAR) on Wednesday. This initiative by PAAR, a Kolkata-based organisation, focuses on supporting the education and well-being of children living with their families in the prison. Under the drive, over 300 hoodies, 600 school shoes and sneakers were distributed to more than 300 children aged between 2 to 13 years. These children study in the primary school or the anganwadi located inside the open prison.

Founder, PAAR, Smita Chakraburtty said: “PAAR advocates for the expansion of the Sanganer model of open prison across the country. Even though our organisation is based out of Kotkata, our team makes an annual visit to the Sanganer prison at this time of the year and provides essentials to the children. We closely support the school and anganwadi.”

Sanganer open prison is the largest open prison in India and is home to 450 prisoners who live with their family. The prison also has an anganwadi and a primary school catering to children, who live with their parents.
