For the first time in Rajasthan, a 43-year old woman from Jodhpur who was suffering from knee deformity and unbearable pain for the last 15 years has been corrected with Llizarov technique with computer assisted method at State’s biggest Sawai Man Singh Hospital in Jaipur.
Dr DS Meena Senior Professor and Head of Deformity Correction Centre, SMS Hospital explaining about this technique said that the llizarov apparatus is a type of external fixation used in orthopaedic surgery to lengthen or reshape limb bone as a limb-sparing technique to treat complex and/or open bone fractures and in cases of infected nonunions of bones that are not amenable with other techniques. This technique with computer assisted method has been used for the first time in Rajasthan at SMS hospital, he claimed.
He said Ashu Devi from Jodhpur was suffering for the last 15 years with knee deformity and unbearable pain. Being from rural area, she was facing many problems in her daily activities. She had consulted many doctors at Jodhpur and even in Ahmedabad, but only faced disappointment everywhere.
Dr Meena said, “Devi was disturbed mentally due to this disability and the entire family was quite worried over the expenses of the treatment and uncertainty.”
Dr Siddharth Sharma, Assistant Professor, SMS Hospital said that Devi contacted Dr Meena, who after intensive investigations assured her for the treatment, that too free of cost under Mukhyamantri Chiranjeevi Yojana. He said, “The surgery was completed by recording deformity data of the patient through computerised software.” After this surgery, the patient will be able to walk normally, he added.
Along with Dr Sharma, Dr Meena’s team included senior professor Dr Devkant and Dr Divyansh, while from the anaesthesia department Dr Gopal Bansal, Dr Chanchal and Dr Renuka extended their support in this surgery.
Dr Sharma said that Dr Meena earlier too has performed successful surgeries of complicated deformities.
